imageManhunter is the Spider-Girl of the DC universe. After two cancellations, fans demanded the comic to continue. This time, write Marc Andreyko is joined by artist Michael Gaydos, whose art fits the dark tone of this book perfectly. Jose Villarrubia’s colors don’t hurt either.

Kate Spencer, a federal prosecutor by day, dons the familiar uniform to become the Manhunter by night (and day, too, sometimes). This is a book with a cult following. And like Spider-Girl, it keeps stumbling on due to fans’ enthusiam for the character.

Manhunter #31, the first issue after “cancellation”, starts with Manhunter battling the Atomic Skull, and whupping his blazing butt. (Well, his butt wasn’t on fire, but you know what I mean). And it was nice to see Kate Spencer in costume more. The problem I had with earlier issues, which may have also lost some reader interest, was that Kate was rarely in costume. Here was a superhero book where the hero never, or barely, appeared in various issues. The stories were quite good, but there wasn’t enough action. Now I can deal with lack of action as long as the rest of the story makes up for it in greatness. But Manhunter tended to suffer when she was out of costume as much as she was. With issue 31, she’s in costume at least half the issue, which I liked. The book I loved returned with a bang.

Here’s hoping Manhunter lasts with healthy sales and Gaydos continuing as artist.
